The Right Order to Update Your Address

The sequence matters. In India, Aadhaar, PAN, Voter ID, and Driving Licence form the foundation of your identity. Banks and insurance companies use Aadhaar as base KYC. If your Aadhaar address is wrong, every other update becomes harder. Follow this order:

1. Aadhaar Card Address Update (Update This First)

Aadhaar is the most important document to update first. Once your Aadhaar reflects the new address, it becomes valid address proof for your bank KYC, insurance updates, and all other government ID changes — saving you repeated trips with separate documents.

Accepted proof of address (PoA) documents for Aadhaar update

The following documents are accepted as proof of address. The document must clearly show your name and new address:

Steps to update Aadhaar address online

  1. Visit myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in and log in with your Aadhaar number and registered mobile OTP
  2. Click ‘Update Aadhaar Online’ → select ‘Address’ → click ‘Proceed to Update Aadhaar’
  3. Enter new address details. Select proof of address document type and upload the scanned copy.
  4. Preview and proceed to payment. Pay ₹75 (non-refundable).
  5. Save the Service Request Number (SRN) for tracking status.

💡 If your address proof is in the Head of Family’s name (parent, spouse), you can still update Aadhaar using their proof along with a valid Proof of Relationship document (marriage certificate, birth certificate). This must be done at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra, not online.

 

2. PAN Card Address Update

PAN does not display the address on the card itself, but the address in PAN database records is used by financial institutions for official communication, ITR processing, and KYC verification. An address mismatch between PAN records and Aadhaar can slow down loan processing and bank verifications.

Your Voter ID is tied to your constituency, not just your postal address. When you move, you may be moving to a different polling area, a different city, or a different state — each requiring slightly different action. The process is entirely free.

  • Valid EPIC number (your current Voter ID number)
  • Aadhaar card (if available; if not, must be declared)
  • Self-attested proof of new address — any one of: utility bill (water, electricity, gas) not older than 1 year; Aadhaar with new address; bank passbook; rental agreement; or other official address document

Steps to update Voter ID address online

  1. Visit voters.eci.gov.in and log in (or register if new user)
  2. Click on ‘Form 8 — Shifting of Residence / Correction of Entries’
  3. Select ‘Self’ (for own Voter ID). Select ‘Shifting of Residence’.
  4. Select ‘Within Assembly Constituency’ or ‘Outside Assembly Constituency’ as applicable
  5. Enter new address details. Upload address proof document.
  6. Complete declaration, enter captcha, and submit. Note the reference number for tracking.

💡 If moving to a completely different state, your name is automatically removed from the old constituency’s electoral roll once your new constituency enrolment is verified and approved. You do not need to separately file for deletion from the old roll.

 

4. Driving Licence Address Update

The driving licence address update is done at the Regional Transport Office (RTO). The updated driving licence is dispatched by post to your new address within approximately 30 days of the application.

5. Banks, Credit Cards, and Financial Accounts

Update all financial accounts within 10 days of moving. Outdated bank address causes returned debit cards, delayed cheque books, KYC freezes, and complications in loan processing. Once your Aadhaar is updated, many banks accept it directly for KYC re-verification.

Home loans and personal loans

  • Notify your home loan or personal loan lender of new address
  • Important: Home loan lenders send interest certificates, disbursement paperwork, and NOC documents by post
  • Outdated address = missed documents that may be needed for ITR or property transactions

Income Tax portal

  • Update address on incometax.gov.in → log in → My Profile → Update Address
  • Income tax notices, refund intimations, and assessment orders are sent to this registered address
  • Business owners must also update GST registration address separately on gst.gov.in

EPF / EPFO

  • Update EPF account address via EPFO Unified Member Portal: unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in
  • Log in with UAN and password → Manage → KYC → update address details
  • Employer approval required after your submission (typically 2–3 days for employer, then 3–5 days for EPFO verification)
  • Total processing time: 5–8 working days
  • PF withdrawal correspondence, annual statements, and employer verification communications are sent to EPF registered address

Demat account and investments

  • Demat account: update KYC via your broker’s portal or CDSL website
  • Stockbroking accounts: update KYC with your broker directly via their app or website
  • Mutual funds: update KYC with your KYC Registration Agency (KRA). A single KYC update reflects across all linked mutual funds.
  • PPF account: update at the bank branch where your PPF account is held
  • NPS (National Pension System): update via the NPS portal (enps.nsdl.com)

💡 After updating your primary bank account, download a fresh e-statement or take a bank letter with your new address stamped. This can then be used as address proof for insurance, demat, and other financial account updates — avoiding the need to visit multiple locations with the same documents.

6. Insurance Policies

Each insurer has its own update process. An address mismatch at the time of a claim can lead to rejection on technical grounds. Update all insurance policies separately — one update at one insurer does not flow to others.

Vehicle insurance (highest priority among insurance updates)

  • Vehicle insurance address MUST match your vehicle RC address. If you relocate to another state, update your RC first, then update vehicle insurance to reflect the new state.
  • Update via: insurer’s official app, website portal, or customer care
  • Documents required: updated RC or new address proof
  • Note: vehicle insurance premium may change based on new location’s risk profile

Health insurance

  • Update via insurer’s official app, portal, or customer service
  • Documents: Aadhaar with new address or any accepted PoA
  • An address mismatch can delay claims processing at your new location

Life insurance

  • Update via insurer’s official portal, branch, or registered email
  • Policy documents, bonus notices, and maturity communications are sent by post — update to avoid missed correspondence

7. Utilities and Connections at New Home

LPG gas connection

  • Same city move:
  • Visit current LPG distributor (Indane / HP Gas / Bharat Gas) with new address proof and existing passbook
  • Submit transfer request. Timeline: 1–2 weeks
  • Also possible online via MyLPG.in
  • Different city move:
  • Surrender existing connection at current distributor (cylinder + regulator + passbook)
  • Receive Termination Voucher (TV) valid for 1 year
  • Take TV + ID proof + new address proof to nearest distributor at new city for fresh SV and consumer number

Electricity connection at new home

  • Inform electricity board of new address. Apply for new connection well in advance.
  • New electricity connection takes 3–7 working days — apply before moving day
  • The first electricity bill in your name at the new address is an important address proof document for multiple subsequent updates

Broadband / internet

  • Notify current provider of disconnection date and apply for new connection at new address
  • New city broadband connection may take longer to activate than within same city — apply early

Mobile postpaid

  • Update billing address with your mobile operator via official app, website, or store visit

8. Delivery Apps, Subscriptions, and Other Services

These are the lowest-priority updates — do them last, after all government IDs, financial accounts, and utilities are done. However, do not forget them entirely: a missed update here leads to misdelivered parcels, wasted orders, and potential security risk if packages contain sensitive items.
