1. Unloading and Inventory Check
The first task at the new home is not unpacking — it is supervision and inspection. Be present for the entire unloading process. This is your only opportunity to document any damage before the movers leave.

BEFORE SIGNING DELIVERY RECEIPT
Inspect all items for damage BEFORE signing any delivery receipt. Once you sign a clean receipt, filing a claim becomes very difficult.
- Check all furniture for scratches, chips, or structural damage from transit
- Check electronics and appliances for visible damage
- Photograph any damage with date-and-time stamp before signing
- Note damaged items on the delivery receipt itself — do not sign a clean receipt if items are damaged

2. Safety Walk-Through: Know Your New Home
Before unpacking a single box, do a safety walk-through of every room. Knowing where your MCB, water shut-off valve, and emergency exits are located is essential — especially in an unfamiliar home.
- Locate the main electricity MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker) / fuse box — know how to reset it if power trips
- Locate the main water supply shut-off valve — essential if a tap bursts or pipe leaks
- Locate the gas cylinder / piped gas shut-off valve
- Test all electrical switches and sockets in every room
- Test all water taps: check pressure and drainage in kitchen, bathrooms, and balcony
- Check for visible leaks under sinks, around the geyser, and at washing machine connection points
- Check all doors and windows: confirm they open, close, and lock correctly
- Test doorbell, intercom, and building entry/exit system
- Note your building’s fire exit route and stairwell location
- If the new home was vacant for some time: check for pest activity before unpacking

3. Appliance Setup and Testing
Test every appliance as early as possible. Problems discovered within 24–48 hours of unloading are far easier to resolve with your mover or insurer than issues found a week later.

- Find: nearest post office (for Aadhaar update confirmation), local vegetable market, dhobi / laundry service

7. Home Security: First Steps
A rented or recently purchased home may have had multiple previous occupants. You cannot know who holds copies of the keys.
- Change the door locks on all entry points on or shortly after Day 1
- If the flat has a digital lock or security system: reset the PIN and access codes
- Add a door chain or security latch as an additional barrier on the main door
- Test all window latches and balcony door locks
- Inform building security of your household members’ names and vehicle details
- Keep a spare key with one trusted person — not hidden in or near the flat
